How clean is your toothbrush?
There is nothing like a fresh, clean-feeling mouth when you have just finished brushing. It probably wouldn’t feel so clean if there were someone else’s fecal matter on your toothbrush – and that is more possible than you may think, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed the toothbrushes of college students who shared bathrooms with roommates. About 60 percent of tested toothbrushes had fecal matter, and about 80 percent of the time, it included matter that came from someone other than the toothbrush owner!

Fortunately, there are ways to keep your toothbrush clean and healthy, even if you share a bathroom with other people:
  • Don’t share your toothbrush
  • Rinse any air dry your toothbrush, because storing in a closed container promotes bacterial growth
  • Never store a toothbrush near the toilet, because a spray of bacteria occurs when it is flushed
  • Replace your toothbrush three or four times a year
  • Don’t store your toothbrush in a location where other people are likely to handle it
