How smoking harms your smile: Beyond yellow teeth
You probably know that smoking can stain your teeth, and increase your risk for diseases such as cancer. According to a new study, it can also increase the number of harmful bacteria living in your mouth. Researchers at University of Louisville School of Dentistry noted that despite extensive study of tobacco’s impact on the immune system, there has been little investigation of its direct effect on disease-causing bacteria. That is exactly what they set out to answer.

The study found greater growth of certain types of bacteria in smokers. The most notable were:
  • Klebsiella pneumonia – These bacteria can cause pneumonia and other infections.
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa – Infections of the blood, lungs, skin, or other areas are possible. Rare strains of pseudomonas aeruginosa are multi-drug resistant, making them especially dangerous.
  • Staphylococcus aureus – This causes skin infections commonly known as staph infections.
  • Streptococcus mutans – These oral bacteria are the cause of dental caries, more commonly known as decay.
Smoking has a negative impact on oral health, which has traditionally been attributed to a decline in immunity. This study indicates the damaging effects may be two-fold, decreasing your immunity while increasing the number of harmful bacteria that your immune system must fight.

Testimonials
"I have been a patient of Dr. Adams for many years and I have nothing but praise for him. He is professional, kind and up-to-date on all aspects of dental practice. He has bleached my teeth in the past (great job) and when I needed an emergency crown put in before a vacation trip to Africa, he made sure I got in and was ready to go with no problems. I would highly recommend Dr. Adams."
