New research suggests a link between oral health and cognitive function in the elderly
The connection between oral health and whole health is well established, but most research has focused on physical conditions. We know that oral disease, especially periodontitis, is associated with diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. But, how does it affect your mind? Researchers at Duke University set out to answer that question. They analyzed more than 50 separate oral health studies, published over a 20-year period. The findings strongly suggest a connection between poor oral health and declining cognitive functionality. Researchers noted the frequency of oral health problems, such as cavities, missing teeth, and periodontal disease. They found a co-relation between these issues and declining cognitive function, especially dementia. Although this preliminary research did not establish a cause and effect relationship, researchers suggest that good oral hygiene and dental care thorough life could potentially help preserve cognitive function.
