Open wide to stay alive!

This year an estimated 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or throat cancer.
Drs. Kosta and Kristen Adams support April’s Oral Cancer Awareness Month as an opportunity to raise awareness of this serious disease and to share information on screening, prevention, and treatment.

What can you do to protect yourself from oral cancer? There are three important steps:

Healthy lifestyle. A number of internal and external factors contribute to oral cancers, but research shows a dramatically increased risk for smokers (especially over the age of 50) and heavy drinkers. The HPV 16 virus, a sexually transmitted disease, is also linked to mouth cancers.

Know the warning signs. See your dentist right away if you experience:
  • An irritation or sore in the mouth that doesn’t heal normally.
  • Patches that look red or white.
  • Numbness, tenderness, or pain in the mouth or lips.
  • A thickening, lump, rough spot, or small erosion.
  • Problems swallowing, chewing, speaking, or with mobility of your tongue or jaw.
  • A change in your bite.
  • Visit your dentist regularly. Routine dental examinations greatly improve your chance of identifying a suspicious change in oral health. Oral cancer examination is a brief, painless process. The dentist inspects your mouth visually, and (with a gloved hand) feels for lumps, or uses a dye test or special light to distinguish unusual tissue.

Many abnormalities are not cancerous, but the five year survival rate for oral cancer patients just exceeds 64 percent. Detection in early stages and effective treatment improves those odds. Schedule your check-up with oral cancer screening today. Together we can open wide and save lives.
