The effectiveness of toothpaste may be affected by antibacterial agent

A Cochrane Oral Health Group team reviewed the results of 30 studies of subjects using toothpaste containing copolymer and triclosan. The analysis found a reduction of 22 percent in both gingivitis and plaque, a reduction of 48 percent in gingival bleeding, and a reduction of 5 percent in decay.

An American Dental Association Council reviewed data on the effectiveness and safety of copolymer/triclosan toothpastes and concluded that they reduced the presence of gingivitis and plaque as well as cavities. Further independent studies are recommended to confirm these findings.

Whether with a fluoride toothpaste containing triclosan and copolymer, or not, dental professionals do know that regular, effective brushing and flossing, as recommended, will help protect their patients’ oral health.

Good oral health is important at every stage of life, and we all know effective oral hygiene and regular dental visits can help protect our dental health, but these easy steps can help as well.
  • Calcium – Eating calcium rich foods such as soybeans, cheese, and yogurt can help maintain the strength of your teeth.
  • Vitamin D – This vitamin, which we typically get from sunshine, helps our bodies absorb calcium.
  • Vitamin C – Deficiencies in vitamin C can cause serious dental problems. Citrus fruits are loaded with this vitamin, but make sure to rinse after eating them because their high acid content could cause enamel erosion.
  • Saliva – Our saliva is our best weapon against bacteria. Drinking water and eating fruits and vegetables increase saliva production, which rinses away bacteria and helps remineralize our teeth.
  • Mother Nature’s toothbrushes – If you can’t brush or floss during the day, foods such as celery, apples, and carrots can clean teeth naturally. Delight your dentist by practicing these healthy habits!
