Sacramento dentist explains root canal therapy

In the past, teeth that experienced an infection or diseased nerves required extraction. Thankfully, due to advances in endodontic dentistry, patients can now save infected teeth using a treatment called root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy, which is also referred to as endodontic therapy, is a procedure that is done to maintain the structure of a natural tooth even after trauma or infection has occurred. Inside of the natural tooth is the canals that hold the dental pulp. The dental pulp is a mass of tissues inside of the tooth that contains the nerves and blood supply necessary to keep the tooth alive. When a deep cavity infects the area or an abscess occurs, it can cause pain and discomfort due to nerve damage. Instead of removing the tooth in its entirety, Drs. Kosta J. Adams and Kristen J. Adams can remove the dental pulp to save the tooth.

Removing the dental pulp is often done within one dental appointment. Patients are numbed in order to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. A special instrument is used to drill a hole into the tooth to access the inner portion. Small, precise tools are used to extract the dental pulp and disinfect the inner canals of the tooth. Then, gutta percha, a natural material, is used to fill and seal the tooth. In some cases, a dental crown may also be fabricated for bonding over the tooth to help protect it from chewing and biting forces. This is because the root canal treatment may leave the tooth brittle and unable to withstand the forces of chewing.
